Director of legendary movies like Taxi Driver, Shutter Island and The Wolf of Wall Street, Martin Scorsese coming aboard for an Indian film is a remarkable moment in the history of Indian cinema. It’s no secret Martin has been an Indian cinema fan after he discovered Satyajit Ray but what we didn’t know is that he is an admirer of Neeraj Ghaywan too. Let’s break all the details we know.
Martin Scorsese Executive Producer Of Neeraj Ghaywan’s Homebound
Last night Masaan director Neeraj Ghaywan announced on Instagram about the great news of Hollywood director Martin Scorsese joining Homebound as an executive producer. Film producer Melita Toscan Du Plantier who also co-produced Neeraj’s Cannes debut Masaan, shared his next project Homebound with Martin. Scorsese liked the idea and offered help.
Speaking about this exclusive Bollywood Hollywood collaboration, Martin Scorsese said, “I have seen Neeraj’s first film Masaan in 2015 and I loved it, so when Mélita Toscan du Plantier sent me the project of his second film, I was curious. I loved the story, the culture and was willing to help. Neeraj has made a beautifully crafted film that’s a significant contribution to Indian cinema. I am glad the movie is an official selection at Un Certain Regard in Cannes this year.”
“Mr. Scorsese mentored us through the screenplay and multiple rounds of editing. He listened with care, understood the cultural context, and offered thoughtful, incisive notes each time. His kindness and commitment are extraordinary, and to have him nurture our film has been both a rare privilege and a profoundly humbling experience!” said Homebound director Neeraj Ghaywan on Martin Scorsese.

What’s The Story Of Neeraj Ghaywan’s Homebound
Neeraj Ghaywan is back at Cannes with his next film Homebound. This took him a decade as his co-producer and lyricist Varun Grover said, “Poore 10 saal lagte haiN iss shehar meiN apne mann ki picture banaane meiN aksar.”
Homebound is a story of two childhood friends from a small village in North India pursuing a police job that offers the dignity they’ve always been denied. But as they move closer to their dream, growing desperation begins to test the bond between them. Vishal Jethwa and Ishaan Khattar are in lead roles playing the two childhood friends.
Martin Scorsese On Indian Cinema
Martin Scorsese has time and again reflected on how Satyajit Ray movies opened the doors of many worlds to him. He was a young boy when Martin saw Satyajit Ray’s Pather Panchali. “So from that point on, cinema opened to me many different worlds. I wonder what it would be like to be a colonised person and a wide part of a colonised world that you live in,” he said in an old interview to PTI.
“… And I said, ‘Wait a minute, those are the people I usually see in the background of other films. What’s the difference here?’ The difference is that this film is being made by them, the real people, and I’m being introduced to another culture and another way of thinking, a whole life and the universality of it all. How we all are, basically the same as human beings.” he continued.
Scorsese praises Satyajit Ray immensely and truly respects his work especially his Apu Trilogy. With Neeraj Ghaywan’s Homebound, Martin Scorsese will make his Indian debut as an executive producer.
