Demi Moore’s The Substance: A Body Horror Film That Took Us By Surprise

demi moore's the substance

Demi Moore’s The Substance mixed with a bit of horror, has captivated viewers and social networks, and its plot is much more complex than any trailer could present. The film introduces us to Elizabeth Sparkle, who has reached the age of 50 and is discriminated against in her job because of her age.

She is fired and replaced, but into her hands comes a proposal: “The substance”.  The substance is a drug that, when injected, creates a much younger version of Elizabeth Sparkle. However, this is only the beginning of the nightmare that Elizabeth Sparkle will live. But why have we been captivated by this story?

Why Demi Moore’s The Substance Worth Watching

Demi Moore’s The Substance is a must-watch body horror film, delivering shocking transformations, psychological depth, and spine-chilling suspense. Here is why the movie caught everybody’s attention.

1. The Substance Story

The film sets us to reflect on the way women are treated when they pass the age of 50. The film exposes how stereotypes can obsess a woman to the point that she loses herself. Youth is gone and when there is no self-love, we see stories of hatred and self-sabotage. The Substance addresses this issue in a metaphorical but quite clear way, in a way that leaves you thinking while, at the same time, makes you question the system that treats women in unfair and insensitive ways.

2. Visuals

Without special effects, a film is constructed that makes a visual impact on any viewer. The substance slips into the “body horror” genre to not only surprise you through the psychological, but also through the visuals that are shown throughout the film.

3. The Substance Cast

Both Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley play unforgettable roles. Both actresses manage to transmit a series of feelings on screen that leave you surprised. The metaphorical fight between the two is shocking and undoubtedly makes you question repeatedly how society treats women to bring them to the last point of their sanity.

Demi Moore’s The Substance is streaming on mubi and is the movie of the moment. However, it is so well produced that we can assume from this moment on that it will become a cult classic. Great for such a wonderful production.
