The Handmaid’s Tale season 6 Final episode: After six intense seasons, The Handmaid’s Tale finally comes to a close. We’ve watched June, played by Elizabeth Moss, suffer, survive and fight back in a world where women had no rights and Gilead ruled with terrifying control. But even as the show ends, there’s one major thread still left hanging: What happens to Hannah? And more importantly, what happens next?
Enter Margaret Atwood’s The Testaments, the long-awaited sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale novel, set about 15 years later. While the TV show followed the original novel’s ending and then branched into its own storyline, The Testaments gives us an official continuation straight from the author herself.
So, do our favorite characters June, Luke and Moira make it into the sequel? And what about Gilead’s fall? Let’s get into it.
What happens in The Testaments? (Spoiler Alerts)
The Testaments is the 2019 sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood. It takes place about 15 years after the events of the original novel and offers insight into the fall of Gilead, the theocratic regime.
The Testaments is told through the perspectives of three women: Aunt Lydia, June’s daughters Agnes/Hannah and Nicole/Daisy.
- Aunt Lydia’s Secret Rebellion: Though she appears loyal to Gilead, Lydia is keeping a secret archive documenting the regime’s crimes. She plans to help destroy Gilead from within by smuggling out damning information.
- Hanna/Agnes is still in Gilead: Raised as a Gilead girl, Agnes is groomed for marriage but instead chooses to become an Aunt. She slowly uncovers the truth about her birth mother (who is June/Offred).
- Daisy/Nicole in Canada: She’s raised by adoptive parents in Canada. After their deaths, she learns she is Baby Nicole, smuggled out of Gilead by June. She undergoes a mission to infiltrate Gilead, with help from Mayday (the resistance).
What happens to June, Luke and Moira in The Testaments?
The Testaments doesn’t focus on June, Luke or Moira directly the way The Handmaid’s Tale does, but we get indirect updates about them, especially through Nicole’s storyline and some contextual clues. Here’s what to expect based on Margaret Atwood’s 2019 novel The Testaments.

Is June Alive in The Testaments?
Yes, June is alive in The Testaments but she doesn’t appear directly in the story. Set more than a decade after The Handmaid’s Tale, The Testaments is told from the point of view of Agnes, Nicole and Aunt Lydia.
While June doesn’t narrate or physically show up, she’s a strong presence throughout the book. Both her daughters learn about her identity and her resistance against Gilead. June becomes a symbol of rebellion.
Is Luke alive in The Testaments
In The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 finale, Luke parts ways with June, telling her, “See you there,” as he heads to New York to help build a resistance base against Gilead. Since The Testaments is set 15 years after these events, Luke’s fate remains uncertain. He isn’t directly mentioned in Margaret Atwood’s sequel novel, but there’s a chance Hulu might take creative liberty and reunite him with Hannah in the adaptation’s ending. His fate is left completely open. The story’s focus shifts to the younger generation, especially the daughters so older characters like Luke are left behind in the narrative.
Will Nick be in The Testaments?
Yes, in the books, Nick is alive and a secret Mayday agent who helps many people compared to what the handmaid’s tale showed. The Handmaid’s Tale season 6 made the future of The Testaments completely unambiguous by turning Nick’s character (Max Minghella) upside down and killing him.
We saw throughout the whole series how Nick helped June, Mark and Mayday several times by leaking confidential information, documents, letters written by handmaids and helping June sneak out. However the final season turned him into an increasingly conflicted and directionless character.
In The Testaments, he is mentioned briefly as Nicole’s biological father and is believed to be helping the resistance from within Gilead. His name comes up mostly in reference to Nicole’s origins and June’s past.
That said, this differs from the show, where in Season 6, Episode 9, Nick dies in a plane explosion. The showrunners created an original ending that’s separate from the books.
What happens at the end of The Testaments
The Handmaid’s Tale season 6 ending has left us with so many questions and mysteries yet to be discovered. The story of Gilead continues with The Testaments, however, with the focus now on June’s daughters rather than her. So we really don’t know if they are still alive or dead or underground. But here’s what to expect.
Agnes and Nicole eventually discover the truth about their biological mother June and how baby Nicole was smuggled out of Gilead. Both the sisters unite in the book and follow the legacy of their mother under the guidance of Aunt Lydia.
Together, they escape Gilead and carry out Aunt Lydia’s secret plan to bring the regime down, smuggling out critical documents known as the Testaments. While June never appears directly, her legacy is carried forward by her daughters.
In the book’s epilogue, set many years later, scholars mention both Agnes and Nicole, though June’s ultimate fate remains a mystery, her influence, however, is undeniable.
