Sholay Remake: “Arre O Sambha, kitna inaam rakha hai sarkar hum par?” Pretty hard to paint someone from the modern day Indian cinema who could play Gabbar and play the way Amjad Khad did. Umm, Oh God, it’s almost impossible to imagine somebody else grabbing Basanti by her arm or smiling with a wit or delivering top notch dialogues written by none other than Salim-Javed, the bollywood screenwriters duo.
Sholay Remake In Modern Bollywood
No doubt nobody can replace the then cast of the megahit film Sholay. However we can make close guesses on who can play who. Grab a seat and pop a corn because you are going to watch a Sholay recap with a brand new cast.
1. Pankaj Tripathi As Thakur?
We couldn’t stop thinking about Pankaj Tripathi when it came to who would play Thakur Baldev Singh or simply Thakur Sahab. I think the last few films and web series Tripathi has acted in, have given a serious and intimidating character, thanks to Mirzapur in which the contradictions between Thakur Sahab and Kaleen bhaiya were too high but the look and the pitch can be compromised. Pankaj Tripathi has to be in the modern Sholay remake.
2. Vicky Kaushal, Varun Dhawan As Jai And Veeru
In the beginning of the film, Thakur Sahab asks the Police Inspector that he needs two men and guess who they are going to be? Vicky Kaushal (without the beard) and Varun Dhawan (without his shirt) can be a perfect fit for Jai and Veeru. Kaushal is tall, dark and handsome like Amitabh Bachchan and is an exceptional performer. While Dhawan too has been seen in comedy roles many times. They resemble the height difference too. Imagine Vicky sitting in the back of the cart stuffing cotton into his ears and Varun in the front, flirting with Basanti while she talks incessantly.

3. Vidya Balan As Basanti
And here is our chatterbox and the fearless beauty diva Basanti who we would like Vidya Balan to play. I had initially thought of Bhumi Pednekar but when I came across Vidya, I couldn’t stop thinking of her as Basanti. I can already hear her saying, “Ye gaav Kheda hai sahib, yahan motor gadi nahi milegi, ki baithe aur garrrrrrrr se chal diye.”
4. Aditi Rao Hydari As Radha
Okay I admit it’s not that difficult to imagine the gorgeous moonlit Aditi walking around Thakur sahab ki haveli cladded in a white saree, holding a lamp and stealing glances at Jai. Aditi has the gifted skills of playing a mischief, innocent character who can also hide trauma and pain behind her twinkling eyes. The other faces that I have in my mind are Rasika Duggal, Konkona Sen Sharma and Pratibha Ranta.
5. Jahnvi Kapoor As Mehbooba
Jahnvi is an absolutely amazing dancer and her belly dance is no more a hidden talent. She has over and again proved her dancing skills in a string of item numbers like ‘Nadiyon Paar’ or ‘Chuttamalle.’
Helen was terrific and breathtaking in Mehbooba Mehbooba back then and there’s no doubt she still remains the queen of our hearts for that, an unmatchable dancing diva.
