RCB captain Virat Kohli faces legal scrutiny after a police complaint accused him of negligence in connection with the Bengaluru stampede that killed 11 fans during RCB IPL 2025 victory celebrations. The tragedy unfolded on June 4, 2025, outside M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru where overcrowding led to a fatal crush during a felicitation event.
Police case against Virat Kohli and RCB
Activist H.M. Venkatesh filed the complaint at Bengaluru’s Cubbon Park Police Station, alleging Kohli’s moral and legal responsibility as RCB’s marquee player. The FIR cites sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including culpable homicide not amounting to murder and rash acts endangering life, against organizers RCB, event firm DNA Entertainment, and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA). Authorities confirmed the event proceeded without proper permissions, with over 2 lakh fans overwhelming the 35,000-capacity venue.

“Virat Kohli of the Bangalore RCB team is the most prominent among those who participated in such gambling and incited people to gather in a specific place and caused this tragedy. Therefore, we request you to please make Virat Kohli and his team members accused in the FIR of this tragedy and take action,” Venkatesh stated in his complaint.

RCB’s marketing head, Nikhil Sosale, was arrested, while three event staff were detained for poor crowd management that further led to the shocking RCB stampede. The Karnataka government suspended senior police officials and appointed a judicial inquiry led by retired Justice John Michael D’Cunha.
The BJP staged protests demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, blaming administrative failures. Meanwhile, Kohli expressed grief on social media, stating he was “absolutely gutted” by the tragedy. “At a loss for words. Absolutely gutted 💔” he wrote on his social hande.
“..The Royal Challengers Bengaluru also issued an official statement, “RCB mourns the tragic loss and extends our heartfelt condolences to the affected families…”
